My 6 year old is starting to learn to read. It is something I often worry about and am personally keen on getting ‘sorted’ - mostly because I like my kids to be as independent as possible. For me, if they know how to read then they are able and much more free to pursue things on their own and without as much help from others.
Life is always hectic in our house at the moment, 4 kids (8 months pregnant), unschooling, business…there is always the guilt that we are not doing enough.
However, I do understand/recognise, as an unschooler that it is not something I wish to force unnaturally upon them.
I’ve heard of many stories of kids learning to read between the age of 3 and 14. One of my sons could read from around 6, but never really wanted to read any books until he was 11, then he read god knows how many in a year. Sometimes we have the ‘problem’ of them staying up too late reading, hah.
